COUNTRY & PEOPLE
Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. In an area which is twice the size of Germany there are roughly 2 million inhabitants. The population is concentrated in the few cities – mainly Windhoek, the capital – and in the northern regions. The country has been independent since 1990 and is called "Namibia" after the Namib desert.
The national flag, chosen when the country became independent, reflects the facets of the country:
Red stands for the Namibian people and the principle of equality
White stands for a life in peace
Green stands for vegetation and fertility
Blue stands for sky and water
The sun symbolizes life and energy, and its rays represent the different tribes living together in Namibia
